Conference Table Refinishing

Some Maintenance Suggestions

Conference table refinishing is cost effective because conference tables are a significant business purchase.

In almost every case it is less expensive to refinish a conference table whose finish has expired than to replace the conference table.

This is especially true if you have a custom conference table using attractive, premium veneer lay-ups.

Periodic maintenance on conference tables is the best way to prevent expensive refinishing.

This is because the veneer that is used  today in conference table construction is very thin.

Consequently, keeping clear topcoats in excellent condition is an under-appreciated approach in protecting your investment in your conference table.

Our best advice is to periodically buff your conference tables to maintain the surface integrity of the clear topcoat. .

Bi-annual buffing of conference tables  is a good investment because it reseals the surface

Buffing conference tables bi-annually (or sooner if needed) is a good practice. Not only will your conference table look great, the buffing process reseals the finish by removing imperfections which can permit moisture intrusion.

Moisture intrusion should be avoided – scratches & gouges in clear coat finishes break the surface integrity, and becomes a gateway to what can become expensive / irreparable damage to the table.

Even routine cleaning & washing of conference table surfaces, as directed, in the presence of scratches can leave dark, unsightly blemishes. that can be difficult to remove – or worse.

Once moisture has entered the table and created a blemish – the severity of the blemish will determine whether a repair can be made or if the table will need refinishing.

Save yourself a head ache and a costly refinishing project – follow our recommendation and periodically buff your conference table to reseal the surface.

We periodically see beautiful conference tables that have entry level clear coat finishes applied to them. So sad!

If you have a conference table in this category you have a few approaches that we suggest.

First, keep moisture off the table – wipe off spills as quickly as possible.

These tables are especially susceptible to moisture damage from ice filled, sweaty glasses and spills from hot coffee cups.

We recommend using a mild detergent, like dish soap to clean table tops, followed by a rinse of clean water, finished with a clean dry towel to  remove moisture.

NEVER – NEVER-NEVER –  clean the surface with ammonia cleaning products, or products containing ammonia – they will discolor the surface.

If serving food, keep condiments, especially mustard, balsamic vinegars, and hot salsas from the surface – and wipe them off as quickly as possible.

We never recommend that caterers place hot trays directly unto the surface of any conference table, especially tables with entry level finishes.

If you continue with attentive care-taking of these type tables, you may achieve several years of serviceable life before refinishing.

If you have a conference table with scratches or gouges, has yellowed (objectionably), or has a clear coating system that is expiring, give us a call.

Because we specialize in refinishing woodwork, including conference tables, we believe we have better expertise than the cabinet shops / architectural mill-work shop who originally built the conference table for you.

Typically, their expertise is in applying coating systems to NEW wood surfaces – and are unfamiliar with the methodologies for refinishing.

If you have questions about your conference table, we’d welcome a call to answer any concerns you may have.
